What Your Score Means

With an APS of 32, you meet the baseline entry score for numerous undergraduate Bachelor's Degrees across South African universities, including Commerce, Humanities, Science, and Education.

*Remember: Meeting minimum APS requirements does not guarantee admission. Competitive selection programmes (e.g. Medicine, Engineering, Law) require faculty-specific subject benchmarks.

How the South African APS System Works

The Admission Point Score (APS) is a standardized metric used by South African tertiary institutions to evaluate applicants for undergraduate studies. Your raw percentage mark in each subject maps to an official NSC Achievement Level from 1 to 7:

The Official NSC 7-Point APS Scale

Level 7: 80% – 100% = 7 Points (Outstanding)
Level 6: 70% – 79% = 6 Points (Meritorious)
Level 5: 60% – 69% = 5 Points (Substantial)
Level 4: 50% – 59% = 4 Points (Adequate)
Level 3: 40% – 49% = 3 Points (Moderate)
Level 2: 30% – 39% = 2 Points (Elementary)
Level 1: 0% – 29% = 1 Point (Not Achieved / Fail)

Why is Life Orientation (LO) Excluded?

The vast majority of public universities (including UJ, UP, Wits, TUT, UCT, NWU, and UFS) strictly exclude Life Orientation from their APS calculation, summing only your top 6 academic subjects. This standard prevents curriculum grade inflation. However, you must still achieve at least Level 4 (50%) in Life Orientation to satisfy national Department of Basic Education (DBE) bachelor endorsement pass rules.
