A past paper is not a reading exercise; it is a diagnostic stress test. You must write out every calculation and word under timed conditions before touching the memorandum. When reviewing the memorandum, do not just check if your final answer is correct—check where each individual method mark, accuracy tick, and penalty was assigned.
1. The 3-Pass Method for Solving Past Papers
Treat the paper like the real exam. Put all study notes and textbooks in another room. Set a countdown timer for the full official duration (3 hours for Maths/Science, 2 hours for Languages). Attempt the entire paper without any interruptions. If you do not know an answer, do not look it up—try something logical or move on.
Download the official DBE marking guidelines. Mark your own paper with a red pen. Do not be generous with yourself. If you made an arithmetic slip in line 2, check whether the memo allows Consistent Accuracy (CA) for line 3. For geometry, check whether your reason in brackets matches the CAPS standard list verbatim.
Every mark you lost must be recorded into a dedicated notebook called your Mistake Journal. Categorize each lost mark into one of three buckets:
- Type A (Knowledge Deficit): You didn't know the definition, formula, or concept. (Action: Go back to textbook, write flashcards).
- Type B (Comprehension Error): You knew the concept, but misread what the examiner was asking for (e.g. calculated diameter when asked for radius). (Action: Highlight keywords in question stems).
- Type C (Execution Slip): Sign error, calculation mistake on calculator, omitted unit. (Action: Practice double-checking).
2. Decoding the DBE Marking Rubric Codes
Official Department of Basic Education memoranda use standard shorthand symbols that every learner should understand:
| Symbol | Full Meaning | How It Affects Your Score |
|---|---|---|
| M | Method Mark | Awarded for using the correct mathematical formula or scientific method. If an incorrect method is used, all subsequent accuracy marks are automatically forfeit. |
| A | Accuracy Mark | Awarded for obtaining the correct numerical value or algebraic expression. |
| CA | Consistent Accuracy | If you make a mistake in part 1, but use that incorrect value correctly in part 2, you still receive full CA marks for part 2 provided it does not oversimplify the problem. |
| S | Statement Mark | Used in Geometry and Accounting for stating a valid relationship or ledger entry. |
| R | Reason Mark | Used in Geometry for providing the correct textbook reason in parentheses (e.g., [tan-chord thm]). |
| -1U | Unit Penalty | A deduction of 1 mark for omitting the correct unit or writing an invalid unit (e.g., writing 50 m/s instead of 50 m·s&supmin;¹). |
| -1R | Rounding Penalty | A deduction of 1 mark for rounding off prematurely in intermediate steps, or rounding to fewer decimal places than requested (the standard default is 2 decimal places unless stated otherwise). |
3. Where to Download Official Past Papers
Always use authentic past papers published by the DBE. Third-party mock papers can sometimes deviate from official CAPS cognitive weighting.
